Letter Part 2
"Low Point. This X describes X X X X X X X X Lingan and was settled very early after the founding of Sydney. A light was erected as early as 178X in the area which now includes Victoria Mines, New Victoria (officially the whole area still comprises the Low Point School Section). Two hundred Grants of land were made at Victoria mines as early as 1794 to families named Eldridge, Clarke, Petrie, MacGillivray, X and Dunphy and in New Victoria area after X to Dunphy, Ratchford, Doyle, Barron and after 1820 to Doyle at Kilkenny. A school was operated by Dugald Gillis in 1831 and in 1832 the new Low Point Lighthouse was completed. Postal way station and a post office were opened in 1855 and 1869 respectively. Indicating increasing population. Bishop McKinnon X 95 during a visit in 1861. The first church was built some time before this, as early as 1825.
The Victorian Mine was opened during or shortly after the U.S. Civil War and operated with varying success for the next 30 years or so. Started by Mossrs. Ross and Company, later known as the Lingan, rail line from pithead to South Bar over which coal was pulled by steam powered engines. The mine was claimed to be one of the areas first submarine mines but it would appear that this distinction belongs to one of the Northside collieries. The mine was apparently sold to the G.M.A. and they sold it to Dominion Coal which operated it briefly then closed the mine. No. 18 started in 1938, eventually reached the old workings and extracted coal from them up its closure in 1966. (1979)
Low Point also known as Flat Point marks the entrance to Sydney's large harbour and has been site of a signal station or light since shortly after the founding of Sydney in 1785. The name Low Point, site of the light, was for many years applied to the whole of the coastal area between Sydney and Lingan Bay to the east of Sydney and was the scene of settlement by large numbers of Irish. Low Point is a major navigational aid and is one of the most important in Canada. Just beyond the light is the pilot station which houses pilots who
guide ships into and out of Sydney harbour. Also nearby
is St. Alphonsus church erected in 1916 whose two towers supplement the light as guides to the harbour entrance and are so mentioned on navigational maps. In facto the towers were financed by harbour pilots in gratitude for the fact that steeple of the previous church destroyed by fire in 1915 had long been a faithful guide and welcome sight for mariners entering Sydney Harbour. The present lighthouse erected in 1936 is 92 feet high and..."
